2017 WINNER OF THE GLOBAL FROST & SULLIVAN VISIONARY INNOVATION LEADERSHIP AWARD
In 2016, PROXA was named the winner of the Frost & Sullivan Enabling Technology Leadership Award for water and wastewater treatment. This year, the company’s efforts have recognised once again and PROXA has been named the global winner of the 2017 Frost & Sullivan Award for Visionary Innovation Leadership. This accolade is in acknowledgment of the work that this forward-thinking team of water treatment specialists have done to become one of the first companies in the world to commercialise eutectic freeze crystallisation technology for industrial use.
Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst, Constance Nyambayo says, “Based on our recent analysis of the liquid waste treatment market, it was clear that PROXA’s deep technological expertise and commitment to innovation make it a world leader in the liquid waste treatment market. In short, PROXA pioneered the use of the eutectic freeze crystallisation process for industrial purposes – enabling customers to extract 99.8% of brine salts from effluents.” Elie Sakhat, PROXA CEO, expands, “We strive to lead from the front by offering our clients long-term holistic solutions. This means that we not only remove waste from water, we help clients optimise existing processes to make them more economical and efficient. Our in-house technologies such as Cascade and Glacier – that aid the recovery of valuable by-products from waste brine for reuse – are good examples of our innovation, R&D capabilities, and real dedication to resolving water treatment issues.”
Nyambayo continues, “We believe that PROXA’s eutectic freeze crystallisation process is changing the playing field as we know it. Thermal and non-thermal zero liquid discharge technologies are failing to meet demand, are inefficient, and require storage facilities that often release waste back into the environment. However, PROXA’s eutectic freeze crystallisation process can extract a variety of salts – including sodium sulfate, phosphate salts, and calcium carbonate – from mixed brines at high purities. These by-products can then be used in a variety of markets, including construction, detergents, and fertilisers.”
Sakhat says, “This new approach offers a number of benefits to the client, including low capital and operating costs. And, in addition to recovering valuable materials from waste streams at low- temperatures, clients can now set up sustainable, profitable and environment-friendly solutions.” He continues, “Our team was able to modify the EFC process to enhance scalability, energy efficiency and commercial success. In simple terms it brings brine down to its lowest possible temperature of solidification at which point the salt crystallises and sinks to the bottom, while the water turns to ice and floats to the top. It’s an approach that offers greater benefits than traditional liquid waste management technologies.”
