Food & beverage

PROXA not only focusses on the provision of high-quality water required for boilers and other processes, but also manages the effluent treatment for wineries, breweries, distilleries, dairies, and abattoirs, to name but a few.

We do this by helping clients optimise their upstream plant processes with the aim of reducing the cost associated with effluent treatment. We also focus on reducing the amount of wastewater produced, prevent the contamination of clean water with dirty water, and point-source treatment versus end-of-pipe treatment. Where possible, we treat water for reuse in factories in addition to investigating waste-to-energy projects and recovery of caustic soda from cleaning waste for reuse, which is a large cost saving initiative in which we are highly experienced.

Mining

The mining and resources sector face unique challenges when it comes to minimising environmental impact, while ensuring access to valuable resources. PROXA – through close co-operation with our clients together with focussed research and development – have become leaders in the implementation of a range of innovative solutions to treat challenging effluents, recover water for reuse and drinking water supply, while minimising the long term legacy risks associated with salt management.

In the field of zero liquid brine discharge, PROXA is a market leader. Using both thermal and non-thermal processes, we have a proven track record in ultra-high water recovery and ZLD applications since 1999.

PROXA brings multiple benefits to the mining and resource sector, including:

  • Ultra-high water recovery (> 99%) on acid mine drainage using non-thermal processes.
  • The reduction of operating costs.
  • Remote operations, reducing operating costs.
  • The implementation of non-chemical treatment processes to reduce operating costs.
  • Implementation of the first full scale cooling crystalliser plant producing 40 tons per day of salt from mine water brine.
  • Thermal evaporation and crystallisation of mine water brines to selectively recovery by products.
  • Construction of robust, modular plants built with the flexibility to manage the inevitable changes in feed water composition and changes in throughputs over the life of the mine.
  • Regulatory interaction and assisting clients with environmental approval processes.
  • Pre-engineered modular units for rapid deployment, reduced footprint and optimal cost.
  • Focus on safety and adherence to the mine health and safety act.
  • The use of our Q-TRAK©remote monitoring system, enables PROXA to keep a finger on the pulse of all operations at all times – regardless of the remoteness of the location.

Power

power

At PROXA, we recognise how critical it is for power plants to have high availability water treatment facilities with reliable throughput and on-specification quality. By combining our technical expertise, big picture solutions, and over a quarter of a century’s worth of experience, we focus on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of these systems using a range of state-of-the-art technologies, including:

  • Media filtration
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Electro-deionisation
  • Ultra-filtration
  • Resin technologies
  • Physical-chemical processes.

Water treatment requirements for power generation include:

  • Production of boiler feed water
  • Cooling tower blow-down treatment
  • Cooling water circuit treatment
  • Condensate polishing
  • High purity wash water for solar collectors
  • Mine water treatment from coal mining operations
  • Oily water effluent treatment
  • Flue gas desulphurisation plants waste water treatment.

Petrochemical

Water is used in the production of nearly every manufactured product. For each product, effective water management is essential to minimising the discharge of waste water into municipal waste water systems and fresh water sources.

The challenge for industry is to reduce the amount of water consumed per unit of valuable product produced. PROXA helps clients achieve solutions for water treatment and reuse, minimising waste and target zero liquid effluent. We do this by interrogating the immediate and long-term challenges and then we create a tailored solution that may involve a fit-for-design-build, the optimisation of an existing process or a combination of the two. All of which is underpinned by high SHEQ awareness and the ability to move fast.

Clients served to date include, among others:

  • Refineries
  • Coal to hydrocarbon installations
  • Polymerisation plants
  • Fertilizer manufacturers
  • Paint manufacturers
  • Solvent producers.

Oil & gas

oil1

The treatment of water in the oil & gas sector can cover a variety of applications ranging from the treatment of raw water for process use, to the treatment of various types of produced water and effluents.

The treatment of raw water typically involves technologies such as clarification, possibly softening and filtration of surface water, potentially followed by secondary treatment in the form of demineralisation for the production of ultra-pure water required for boilers and thermal systems. The treatment of other water streams, e.g. blow-down from cooling systems is often required to make efficient use of available water.

Waste streams may constitute produced water from process operations, ash water and high salinity effluents. PROXA can treat these for safe environmental disposal, recovery water, and/or for valuable in-process use. In many instances, the complete elimination of liquid waste streams is desired, which calls for a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) treatment concept.

At PROXA, we have a range of treatment technologies at our disposal for this purpose, ranging from physical-chemical and biological treatment to membrane separation and thermal (evaporator/crystalliser) plants. To this end, each application is generally evaluated from a techno-economical perspective due to the variety and complexity of treatment requirements and suitable technology options.

Mineral

mineral

The minerals sector requires the treatment of large water volumes. Depending on the type of mining and processing arrangement, this can relate to water produced or water required for the various operations.

Often, the only possible water source for in-land mines in arid areas is desalinated seawater. On the other hand, the treatment of decant water – as a result of mining operations – may be required for safe discharge to the environment. Here again applications may range from treatment of raw water to the recovery of water and/or valuable to a ZLD requirement.

At PROXA we have a variety of technologies at our disposal for the treatment of surface water, brackish and seawater, as well as mine and process waters, including the beneficiation of recoverable salts and other by-products.

Steel

oil

Large quantities of water are used in the production of steel. It’s used in processes such as cooling, descaling, dust scrubbing and in the production of boiler feed water. The challenge for the steel industry is to reduce the amount of fresh water it consumes and to reduce effluent generation per ton of steel produced. The effectiveness of total water management on-site is crucial to the cost effectiveness of the operations. In areas where there are fresh water shortages the need for zero brine discharge from the manufacturing sites is crucial. PROXA is familiar with these challenges and has assisted both Columbus Stainless and Arcelor Mittal in meeting these objectives.

What’s more, opportunities exist to include the recovery of valuable materials from waste products, which is an area where we can offer particular expertise. Our clients in this sector include:

  • Heavy steel & coking applications
  • Stainless steel manufacturers
  • Large capacity smelters
  • Automotive & parts
  • Plating, galvanising & anodising industries.
