PROXA not only focusses on the provision of high-quality water required for boilers and other processes, but also manages the effluent treatment for wineries, breweries, distilleries, dairies, and abattoirs, to name but a few.
We do this by helping clients optimise their upstream plant processes with the aim of reducing the cost associated with effluent treatment. We also focus on reducing the amount of wastewater produced, prevent the contamination of clean water with dirty water, and point-source treatment versus end-of-pipe treatment. Where possible, we treat water for reuse in factories in addition to investigating waste-to-energy projects and recovery of caustic soda from cleaning waste for reuse, which is a large cost saving initiative in which we are highly experienced.

Oil & gas
The treatment of water in the oil & gas sector can cover a variety of applications ranging from the treatment of raw water for process use, to the treatment of various types of produced water and effluents.
The treatment of raw water typically involves technologies such as clarification, possibly softening and filtration of surface water, potentially followed by secondary treatment in the form of demineralisation for the production of ultra-pure water required for boilers and thermal systems. The treatment of other water streams, e.g. blow-down from cooling systems is often required to make efficient use of available water.
Waste streams may constitute produced water from process operations, ash water and high salinity effluents. PROXA can treat these for safe environmental disposal, recovery water, and/or for valuable in-process use. In many instances, the complete elimination of liquid waste streams is desired, which calls for a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) treatment concept.
At PROXA, we have a range of treatment technologies at our disposal for this purpose, ranging from physical-chemical and biological treatment to membrane separation and thermal (evaporator/crystalliser) plants. To this end, each application is generally evaluated from a techno-economical perspective due to the variety and complexity of treatment requirements and suitable technology options.
The minerals sector requires the treatment of large water volumes. Depending on the type of mining and processing arrangement, this can relate to water produced or water required for the various operations.
Often, the only possible water source for in-land mines in arid areas is desalinated seawater. On the other hand, the treatment of decant water – as a result of mining operations – may be required for safe discharge to the environment. Here again applications may range from treatment of raw water to the recovery of water and/or valuable to a ZLD requirement.
At PROXA we have a variety of technologies at our disposal for the treatment of surface water, brackish and seawater, as well as mine and process waters, including the beneficiation of recoverable salts and other by-products.

Large quantities of water are used in the production of steel. It’s used in processes such as cooling, descaling, dust scrubbing and in the production of boiler feed water. The challenge for the steel industry is to reduce the amount of fresh water it consumes and to reduce effluent generation per ton of steel produced. The effectiveness of total water management on-site is crucial to the cost effectiveness of the operations. In areas where there are fresh water shortages the need for zero brine discharge from the manufacturing sites is crucial. PROXA is familiar with these challenges and has assisted both Columbus Stainless and Arcelor Mittal in meeting these objectives.
